LEGENDS ON SUNDIALS

Some sundials usually have a more or less short phrase which is called "Motto or Legend".

These phrases mainly refer to Time, Light and the Sun. They usually do it from a religious or philosophical point of view through statements and even in a humorous or funny way.

RAGALAXYS LEGENDS

- At dusk I go to bed, at dawn I get up and I sing the hours in-between.

- The cock wakes me up in the morning and at down I fall in silence.

- When the day is cloudy I seem to be gone.

- I signal the hours when the shadows touch me.

- I work in summer, in winter I decorate.

- Time is flown and with it the hours were sung.

- I will exist as long as the Sun shines on me.

- Whereas some hear the bell singing, the cock in the morning sings for me.

- I don't tell you the time you want, but the one the Sun allows me to tell.

- Here the stonemason worked hard to signal the true time.

- Special time, sunny hours.

- The earth rotates as time goes by.

- Do as the sundial does, enjoy the happy hours.

OTHER LEGENDS

The following legends have been taken from Rafael Soler Gaya's book "How to design and build sundials and moon clocks" (1997) :

- "Tempus Fugit". Time flees.

- "Life is short". Arts are perdurable, life is short.

- "Amicis Qualibet Hora". Any hour for my friends.

- "Carpe Diem". Seize the day.

- "Sine Sole Sileo". Without the Sun I fall silent.

- "Soli Soli". Alone under the sun.

- "Sum Si Sol Sit". Only if the sun shines.

- "Vivere Memento". Enjoy the moment.

- "Sit Fausta Quae Labitur". May the hour be favorable.

- "Mean Non Tuam Noscis". You know the one that is mine, not the one that is yours.

- "Lex Mea Sol". Oh Sun, your are my law!

- "Loquor, Sed Non Caecis". I talk to anyone, but not to the blind.

- "Illuminat Umbra". It gives light with a shadow.

- "Defecit Sol, Nemo Respicit". No one comes to see me when the sun becomes cloudy.
